Holter Monitor
Portable 24-48 hour continuous heart rhythm recording to capture irregular heartbeats.
What Is a Holter Monitor?
A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that continuously records your heart’s rhythm for 24 to 48 hours as you go about your daily life. It works like a long-term EKG, capturing every heartbeat so your doctor can spot irregular rhythms that may come and go and wouldn’t be caught during a brief office visit.
Why Is It Done?
Your doctor may recommend a Holter monitor if you’re experiencing palpitations, dizziness, fainting spells, or unexplained fatigue that could be related to an irregular heartbeat. It’s also used to evaluate how well heart rhythm medications are working or to monitor your heart after a procedure. Because symptoms often happen unpredictably, this extended recording greatly increases the chance of catching the problem.
What to Expect
Small adhesive electrode patches will be placed on your chest and connected by thin wires to a small recording device about the size of a deck of cards. You’ll wear this device clipped to your belt or carried in a pouch for 24 to 48 hours. You’ll go home and carry on with your normal activities. Working, sleeping, and light exercise are all fine. You may be asked to keep a brief diary noting any symptoms and what you were doing when they occurred.
How to Prepare
No fasting or special preparation is needed. Shower before your appointment, as you won’t be able to get the device wet while wearing it. Avoid lotions or creams on your chest so the electrodes stick well. Wear a loose-fitting top that’s comfortable over the device and wires.
