Hypertension Management

Blood pressure control, monitoring, and treatment to reduce cardiovascular risk.

What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension (high blood pressure) means the force of blood pushing against your artery walls is consistently too high. Over time, this extra pressure damages your arteries and forces your heart to work harder than it should. It’s called the “silent killer” because most people have no symptoms at all. The only way to know is to check your blood pressure regularly.

Why Is It Treated?

Uncontrolled high blood pressure significantly increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney damage, and vision loss. The good news is that it’s highly treatable. Bringing your blood pressure into a healthy range is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your heart and overall health. Even small improvements in blood pressure can make a big difference in your long-term risk.

What to Expect

Your doctor will measure your blood pressure at each visit and may recommend home monitoring to get a more complete picture of your readings throughout the day. Your evaluation may include blood work and other tests to check for organ damage or underlying causes. Treatment typically includes lifestyle modifications (reducing salt intake, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol) along with medications if needed. Your doctor will work with you to find the right combination that controls your blood pressure with minimal side effects.

How to Prepare

If you monitor your blood pressure at home, bring a log of your recent readings. Bring a list of all medications and supplements you currently take, including over-the-counter drugs like pain relievers, which can affect blood pressure. Be prepared to discuss your diet, exercise habits, stress levels, and alcohol intake. If you’ve been prescribed blood pressure medication, take it as directed on the day of your appointment.
